"Happily ever after isn’t a finish line, it isn’t a paradise, and it isn’t a phenomenon that makes all your dreams come true. Happily ever after is about finding happiness within yourself and holding on to it through any storm that comes your way. And nothing has helped me grasp that happiness more than having friends and family like you. Knowing I have so many people to love and support me is the most magical feeling in the world. Now I’m certain that happily ever after exists because you are the happy ending I’ve dreamed about since I was a little girl. So, to quote that bookworm when she departed this world for the first time, ‘Thank you for always being there for me, you’re the best friends I’ve ever had.’ And now, four years later, I still mean every word of it."
— Alexandra Bailey to the assembled characters of fairy-tales, literature, and Conner Bailey's short stories[1]

Alexandra Marie "Alex" Bailey is an elderly woman with blue eyes, in her youth she had strawberry-blonde hair.[2] Alex is the current Fairy Godmother and a crucial member of the Fairy Council. Alex Bailey and her brother, Conner Bailey, have played a significant role in the shaping of the Land of Stories, and have saved the fairytale world several times.

When Alex had first discovered the Land of Stories with her brother, she was a 12 year-old girl in the 6th grade from the Otherworld, she lived in a small rental house along with Conner and their mother, Charlotte Bailey. Her father, John Bailey, had died shortly before she and her brother turned 11.

After Charlotte had married Dr. Robert Gordon (usually known as Bob), Alex chose to stay in the Land of Stories, while Conner and Charlotte moved into Dr. Bob’s house. Her family explained her absence by saying she had went off to live with her grandmother in Vermont and attended a school there.[3]

Biography

Collecting the Wishing Spell Items

Alex and Conner worked as a team to solve the Wishing Spell's riddles and collect the items they needed to return to their world. After defeating the Evil Queen, Alex found out she is part fairy and is related to the Fairy Godmother.

Defeating the Enchantress

When their mother was kidnapped, Alex and Conner returned to the Land of Stories. The kingdoms were under attack from the Enchantress, and Alex found out that she was a 'part' of the magic spell the Enchantress was trying to use to create a portal because she was the 'heir to the throne of magic'[4]. She and Conner assembled the Wand of Wonderment to stop the Enchantress. In the end, Alex managed to defeat the Enchantress, albeit with her empathy rather than her magic. She took away her pride, when the gateway to her world closed, she chose to stay in the Land of Stories to learn magic from her grandmother.

Battling the Grande Armée

Alex was accepted into the Fairy Council and was immediately faced with difficult choices; her grandmother fell ill, making her the Acting Fairy Godmother, and the Land of Stories was under attack from the Grande Armée and the Masked Man. She made up a battle plan and, aided by Conner, convinced Trollbella and Elvina's armies to join their forces. Her magic rallied the armies together and helped save the kings and queens. After the battle, she became the new Fairy Godmother and founds the Happily Forever After Assembly.

Ungodmothering and Chasing the Masked Man

Alex had become obsessed with finding the Masked Man and was thrown out of the Fairy Council because of the obsession leading to her neglecting her Fairy Godmother duties. Upset, she fled to the Giant's Castle, where she found Mother Goose. Mother Goose promised to help Alex. Her grandmother sent her a magical moth to show her a memory of the Masked Man, revealing his identity. She met with Cornelius and Rook, who had discovered the Masked Man's hideout. Alex and Mother Goose returned to their friends and the quest to find the Masked Man began. They followed him into the books, first to Oz, then to Neverland and Wonderland.

Physical Appearance

Alex was described as being rather pretty, with strawberry-blonde hair she held back with a pink headband, and bright blue eyes.

Though she and Conner were twins, they haven't "looked like identical twins since they were four years old" when "Charlotte stopped dressing them in the same outfits every day".[5]

Though decades later her hair had become white with old age, Alex was still a beautiful bright-eyed woman, and she wore a sparkling robe and a headband made of silver flowers, Alex is described like looking a lot like her late grandmother, the first Fairy Godmother.

Personality

Alex was described by a lot who knew her as a bookworm, eager to please her teachers, get good grades and impress her classmates. Because of this, she was often teased and made fun of behind her back, and used to spend her lunch breaks alone, reading. She was described as being very lonely[6] as well because of the teasing she underwent. When she and her brother arrived in the Land of Stories, she was very excited to see all of the famous sites and meet her favorite "characters"; to the point of occasionally getting emotional over it because the fairy tales meant so much to her as a child. She feels that the fairy tales' characters are her only friends.

When the twins went to rescue their mother in their second adventure in the Land of Stories, she displayed some magic, proving that she was "born with magic": she activated a portal, and successfully used the Wand of Wonderment twice before it was completed (against The Snow Queen[7] and in the Troblin Territory).[8] She is also the only one who was capable of defeating the Evil Enchantress, albeit without magic by verbally taking her pride.

After Alex decided to stay in the Land of Stories she put a lot of pressure on herself to become a proper fairy, to make herself worthy of the title 'Next Fairy Godmother'. When she met a boy she liked, she was very skeptical and introspective about it at first, because she was afraid any heartbreak might turn her into another Ezmia.[9] This shows that Alex does not wish to harm people or to stray from the right path and is willing to put her responsibilities before her feelings. Her fear returns later when she is betrayed by Rook and lashes out at the soldiers attacking her; Conner reminded her that it was self-defense, and she was not like Ezmia at all.[10]

Even though Rook explained his reason for betraying her, Alex was unwilling to forgive him, showing that she can hold a long grudge. What happened with Rook made Alex even more resolute about placing her fairy duties before her feelings.

When Alex was accepted into the Fairy Council, the other fairies explained that she had unknowingly passed their Inaugural Test of Courage (by having defeated Ezmia), Grace (by granting people's wishes even when faced with rudeness and ungratefulness), Kindness (by accepting Cornelius) and Heart (by her motivation to become the next Fairy Godmother), showing that she is a good person at heart.

She showed exceptional leadership and magic skills during her third adventure in the Land of Stories.

Ever since she accidentally hurt the soldiers of the Grande Armée, Alex lost control of her magic more and more. Whenever she felt overwhelmed or angry, bad things happened to those around her. During the battle in the Witches Brew, she levitated the tavern full of people high into the air and only barely managed to reign her magic in before she dropped it; she made the trees come alive to grab her friends and foes, such as when she unconsciously attacked Cornelius because she was frustrated[11]; when she tried to squeeze Lieutenant Rembert for information on the Masked Man, she literally squeezed everyone with trees, including her friends.[12] Her out-of-control state was finally revealed to the Fairy Council when she was un-godmothered after she blasted fiery spells at the Fairy Council.[13] Conner, who was also present, admitted that Alex's powers had been slipping out of control for months, although nothing like this before. The episodes also affected Alex's memories, and she had difficulties remembering what happened after she calmed down. Her "temper problems" were revealed to be caused by demon mirror dust. Demon mirror dust was created when there were only two races in the world, demons and angels. The demons had a mirror that made everyone see the worst in themselves, and they decided to bring it to the angels as a prank. On their journey, the mirror broke, shattering it into thousands of tiny shards and spread across the world, making everyone who breathed in the dust see the worst in themselves. This was cast on Alex by the Snow Queen and the The Sea Witch, in order to turn her into a weapon, so they could manipulate Alex and use her to their own evil ends. Alex was strong enough to fight off the curse, so the Snow Queen and the Sea Witch decided to ask the other witches to join forces with them to strengthen the curse.

Powers and Abilities

  • Fairy Magic: As a half fairy, Alex has access to vast magical powers in fact she was considered the most powerful fairy even more than Ezmia.
    • Energy Projection: Alex can launch powerful beams of magical energy from his hands.
    • Telekinesis: Alex can levitate objects with her mind, she is even capable of levitating herself.
    • Animation: Alex is able to make inanimate statue-like beings come to life and do his bidding.

Relationships

Conner Bailey

Alex and her twin brother Conner are very close, though Alex occasionally feels second-hand embarrassment for Conner's behavior at school or the stuff he says.[14]Eventually she comes to appreciate him more when he stays optimistic in the face of hopelessness and danger.[15] Conner offered to stay with her in the Land of Stories for a while to help her adjust to being the new Fairy Godmother after the defeat of the Grande Armeé. Alex is very upset with Conner for not being on her side at the 'un-godmothering', but they make up after Alex finds out the Masked Man is their uncle. When they were trapped in separate worlds, they both thought of making the Portal Potion at the same time, proving once more that they "think like twins".[16]

Brystal Evergreen

Alex was very close to her grandma, the Fairy Godmother. She missed her very much, and changed her appearance after her death, and refrained from using a wand for it reminded her of her grandma.[17] However, she soon got over it and continued with her life. She often prayed to her grandma for help and once, Brystal sent her a magical moth from the stars to show her the true story about the Masked Man.

Arthur

When she met Arthur and spent two weeks with him in his world, they fell in love. They took a stroll and had a romantic kiss. She wanted to spend more time with him and get to know him better. She was tempted to stay in his world with him but knew she had to go back and save the kingdoms. She felt like leaving him was the hardest thing she had ever done[18], but knew that they would meet again one day. Arthur told Alex that the lock he gave Alex were his and wouldn't work unless Alex was his true love. The potion worked and Alex successfully traveled back to her home world(s). Eventually Arthur and Alex stumbled upon each other in their dreams and communicated. During this time, Alex was put asleep by the witches as they didn't have a use for her at the moment. Alex cried and warned Arthur that she wouldn't be alive for long. This worried Arthur and after he woke up, he told Mother Goose and Merlin that Alex was in trouble. They refuse to believe him, so he went to the sword in the stone and tried to complete his destiny early so Mother Goose would have no excuse to not let him visit Alex (they made an agreement that Arthur would be able to visit Alex after he achieves his destiny). After becoming king of England and creating the Knights of the Round Table, he came to the Land of Stories with his Knights, Mother Goose, and Merlin in search for Alex. During his visit, He encountered Rook and the two fought over Alex forming a love triangle. After the war, he and Alex kissed. She put their relationship on hold, saying that until Arthur found the Holy Grail, they cannot be together. They said goodbye, but Arthur believed that this hold on their relationship wouldn't last long since he was determined to find the Holy Grail in the span of about two months.

Rook Robins

Alex had feelings for Rook almost immediately when she first met him. When they met, Rook invited her on a walk. They went on a walk feeling very mutual about their feelings about each other, and they left the walk loving each other. Rook spied on her during the Inaugural Ball in which Alex became the next Fairy Godmother, and she chased him out into the gardens, and they shared their first kiss, and Alex was head over heels with Rook. But Alex was unable to forgive him for betraying her and the royals when General Marquis was hurting his friends and family. Later in her fourth adventure he helped her find the Masked Man, but she still felt the same way.[19] Rook led her to her friends, and the royals. She only thought he led her to the place they were hiding because he wanted to earn Alex's redemption. When Alex was being controlled by the witches, Rook convinced his father to let him go to the Otherworld because he wants to make it up to Alex. Unfortunately, Rook died, as he was saving Alex and he got shot in the chest with a sniper, just as it was about to puncture Alex's heart. The last thing Alex saw of her friend was blood dripping down his chest. Later, Alex apologized to Farmer Robins for not forgiving him, and he understood, and told Alex that he was a stubborn boy.
