"I gave you life. And you are never going to top that."-Charlotte Bailey

Background[]

Mrs. Charlotte Bailey is an original character from The Land of Stories series.

She is Alex's and Conner's mother, and a nurse at the local children's hospital. She works a lot of double shifts to support her family, seeing her children only during lunch and dinner breaks. She was married to John Bailey for twelve years[1] and is currently married to Dr. Robert Gordon.

Appearance[]

"Charlotte Bailey was a very pretty woman with red hair and freckled skin that the twins undoubtedly had inherited from her. She had a huge, caring heart and loved her kids more than anything in the world."[2]

Charlotte is described as a tall, slender and very pretty woman with pale freckled skin, blue eyes, and back-length shiny auburn hair, she usually wears her nurse's uniform.

Personality[]

Mrs. Bailey is described as a very hard-working woman, who loves her job but feels very guilty about not having that much time for her own children.

"The situation made Mrs. Bailey feel like the worst mother in the world, and their understanding made her feel even worse. She would have much rather watched them throw a fit or get angry or show any emotion appropriate for their age. They were too young to be used to disappointment." [3]

In the first book, she is said not to be a very good liar (her children see through her when she claims not to be bothered by the news that their old house was sold[4]), but she manages to fool Ezmia into believing she is the Fairy Godmother's granddaughter for a long time in The Enchantress Returns. She also convinced the twins' school that their absence during their first journey to the Land of Stories was due to chicken pox, and that later on the twins moved to Vermont one after another.[5]

She is very kind and understanding and is willing to help her children at any cost.

Relationships[]

John Bailey[]

She describes her first husband as the "love of her life"[6]. John Bailey was the first person to use The Wishing Spell. He used it to get back to the Otherworld to see Charlotte again. A month after John Bailey used the wishing spell, the two got married. Charlotte and John had their children, Alex and Conner, which connected The Land of Stories and the Otherworld. John dies in a car accident before the events of The Wishing Spell. After John died, Charlotte fell into a mild depression.

Dr. Bob[]

Some time after John's death, Charlotte met Dr. Bob and dated him for months, as he understands her well. Dr. Bob had lost his spouse a year before Charlotte lost hers, and they had made promises to their respective spouses to move on after their deaths. The twins find out about their relationship in the beginning of The Enchantress Returns. He intended to propose to her, but she was captured by Ezmia. At the end of The Enchantress Returns, Dr. Bob proposes to Charlotte and they are married at the Charming Kingdom. Princess Hope acted as their flower girl; Conner was Dr. Bob's best man, and Alex was the maid of honor.[7] As of the beginning of A Grimm Warning, Charlotte and Conner now live at Dr. Bob's house.

Story[]

Meeting John[]

When she was younger, Charlotte worked as a nurse at the hospital. One day, Mrs. Brystal Evergreen arrived with her son John to read stories to the patients at the hospital. John asked Charlotte to give him a tour of the hospital, somewhat surprised by her request, she accepted.

They both spent time together and Charlotte began to fall in love with him and Jhon with her, however one day Jhon disappeared and Charlotte, although left quite sad, continued with her life.

Mirriage[]

After almost a three years Charlotte met John again in his hospital, he was dirty and wounded, it looked like he had returned from a war, he just told her: You have no idea what I had to go through to be able to see you again.

After a few months they got married and within a year Charlotte became pregnant, giving birth to two twins whom they named Alex and Conner, having a great happy life for eleven years.

Trayedy[]

On her children's 11th birthday, Charlotte received terrible news: her beloved husband had died.

After the funeral, the family was left with multiple debts and Charlotte was forced to sell the house where they lived and take extra shifts at work to support her children, but taking her away from them. Secretly, Charlotte used to cry over a photo of her husband John, begging him to give her the strength to continue with this horrible change that came to both her life and her children.

1. The Wishing Spell[]

In The Wishing Spell, Mrs. Bailey only appears in the first chapter, before the twins enter the Land of Stories. After she is forced to cover a shift at her children's birthday, Charlotte collapses in sadness, crying over a photo of John, saying that she couldn't be strong enough for him and his children.

Her children come to comfort her and tell her that they will be fine, but she feels bad about herself for not being able to be with them on her birthday. But Brystal, her mother-in-law, arrived to brighten things up a little, helping Charlotte a little to fix everything and be with her children on her birthday.

2. The Enchantress Returns[]

Charlotte begins dating her co-worker Dr. Robert Gordon. When her children find out, they are quite upset with the idea of their mother falling in love again. She made it clear to them that even if she moves on with her life, John will always be her true love.

3. A Grimm Warning[]

Charlotte appears briefly in the first chapter, and gives Conner permission to go on his trip to Germany.

4. Beyond the Kingdoms[]

Again, only a brief appearance for Charlotte: a "magic mirror call" with Conner, in which she berates him for not calling enough. She knows about some of the events of A Grimm Warning, but Alex and Conner haven't told her everything. She doesn't know about the Masked Man or Alex's problems with controlling her magic yet.

5. An Author’s Odyssey[]

Charlotte appears when the twins are discussing where to keep the characters that they are going to recruit. They eventually both think of their mom. When they go back to their old house, Bob greets them at the door, and Charlotte tells them to go inside. She is angry at them for never calling, or visiting, or anything, and it is revealed that they don’t know that it’s their own birthday. Charlotte eventually agrees to host the characters, and after the pirates of Starboardia make a mess, she moves all the characters to the hospital she and Bob work at. Charlotte helps the characters put on a play (the life of Queen Trollbella), and is often seen helping the characters is some way or another.

"I gave you life. And you are never going to top that."

"Dragons and armies are going to look like bunnies to me!"

"Oh, when did you become so understanding?"
