"That's where you're wrong, you see. I came into this world just like I'm assuming you did - full of excitement and promise. I wanted to do so much good work, help so many people, and give as much as I could to those who needed me. But then I learned a very harsh lesson - the world doesn't always give back."
— Ezmia, The Echantress

Ezmia, also known as the Enchantress, was the former to-be Fairy Godmother, a former good fairy, and a current evil fairy. She is the main antagonist in The Enchantress Returns. Long before the events that take place in the books, Ezmia was cursed by Morina (the same curse which would also affect Alex, albeit in large quantities, later on), and eventually turned evil, and tried to take over all the kingdoms in the Land of Stories. During that time, she was also responsible for putting the Sleeping Curse on Sleeping Beauty's kingdom. After many long years, she returned to take over all of the Kingdoms in the Land of Stories. She eventually met her death at the hands of Alex Bailey.

Biography

Early Life

Ezmia was taken into the Land of Stories when she was five years old, after Brystal found her all alone in a forest located in the Otherworld. Her village had been attacked and she was the only survivor through protecting herself with magic she barely knew how to use. She became the apprentice of the Fairy Godmother and was supposed to become her successor and head of the Happily Ever After Assembly. But the more successful she became with her magic, the more the other fairies became jealous and resented her. She became unhappy with herself and believed she was unable to make friends or be happy because of her horrible personality. This was only an illusion, however, as only the Snow Queen and Sea Witch's curse, the very same that would affect Alex a few years later (albeit much stronger), that made her believe this. She became lonely and estranged from the others.

Becoming the Enchantress

Ezmia fell in love with a baker from the village only to find out his affections for her had been a ruse, a joke he played on her with the other village youths. When she demanded his apology, he refused. To punish him, she enchanted a gingerbread man to life. The uproar this caused made the baker's family lose their bakery. Ezmia later fell in love with a locksmith who abused her, with Ezmia's self-esteem at such a low point that she thought she deserved no better. After she finally managed to break up with him, she fell in love with a musician, who was more in love with the idea of being with the future Fairy Godmother than with Ezmia herself. Trying to hold on to his love so that she could finally have a caring boyfriend, she gave him enchanted gifts all the time, but he still cheated on her. As a punishment, she turned one of his lovers into an instrument. Then she had a relationship with a soldier, who kept their affair a secret out of shame for the sake of his career. She cursed him angrily when he refused this, destroying his career forever. Then she fell in love with a king, who became her best friend, but did not return her romantic feelings. She tried a love potion on him, but it failed. When he found out what she had done, he got into a horrible argument with her. As a retaliation, she bewitched him into a beast.

Ezmia began to worry that everybody truly hated who she was, and would never love her, causing her to become more sadistic and unhappy. When she suggested dealing with the "troll and goblin problem" by flooding their territory and drowning them (something she actually did, much to Trollbella's delight), Brystal changed her mind about naming Ezmia her successor, and made Emerelda her successor instead. Feeling hurt and betrayed, Ezmia abandoned the Fairy Council and became an evil fairy, calling herself The Enchantress.

Full Might and Disappearance

Ezmia then made a plan to take over the Land of Stories, and needed a child of royal blood to do so. Her plan using Rumpelstiltskin to kidnap Sleeping Beauty failed, and being confronted with the Fairy Council about her actions made Ezmia furious and she cursed the baby princess to die, though Brystal was able to convert the deadly spell into the Sleeping Curse. Then, Ezmia found another royal child, Evly, that was soon to be born. She made a deal with Evly's mother to give her the baby, but the mother refused. After finding out Evly was not of royal blood (her mother was uncomfortable on the mattresses only because she was pregnant), Ezmia decided to train her to seduce Prince White and create a royal baby that way. However, Evly has already fallen in love with someone else. And so, Ezmia captured Mira and locked him away in a mirror so she could control Evly, but the heartbroken young woman plotted Ezmia's death by stabbing her with a poisoned dagger. Ezmia, on the brink of death, was saved by Hagatha, who then took her on as an apprentice but treated her badly. As revenge, Ezmia pushed Hagatha into the Thornbush Pit and cursed the vines. Then, she disappeared, biding her time to strike again.

The Enchantress Returns and Her Death

After many centuries Ezmia finally decided to return for revenge, first attacking the Eastern Kingdom causing thorny vines to begin to cover the entire kingdom, later she tried to capture the fairy godmother's granddaughter but by mistake she captured Charlotte Bailey. She later broke into Pinocchio's Prison to break out Rumpelstilskin, he told her that he thought she was dead, Ezmia proceeded to tell him how she was poisoned by Evly and then took refuge with a witch named Hagatha. Due to the poison, all the kingdoms considered Ezmia dead, she threatened Rumplestilskin to fulfill her part of the agreement and he reluctantly went with her, but not before saying goodbye to her flower which after leaving, Ezmia destroyed.

Ezmia bursts into the happily ever after assembly and gives all the kings an ultimatum, surrender and hand over their kingdoms to her or suffer her eternal wrath. All the kingdoms refused, so before leaving she captured the Fairy Godmother in a jar, but not before telling them that they made the worst mistake of their lives and subsequently she disappeared in a violet lightning bolt.

Later Ezmia returned to Hagatha's cabin which she turned into her hideout after the witch's death, there she tells Charlotte what motivates her to do what she does. to which Charlotte, without any sympathy, demands that her pain is no excuse to take revenge on everyone. When Ezmia goes to her chambers to rest, Rumpelstilskin curiously asks her if after conquering the world she would feel satisfied and she, with a malicious smile, tells her that whoever told her that she wanted only this world?

Ezmia begins to attack each of the important monuments of the kingdoms, first the wall of the Center Kingdom disappears, then she demolishes Rapunzel's tower of the Corner Kingdom and flooding the territory of trolls and goblins.

Legacy

Worlds Collide

When Alex was cursed by Morina she began to see the world the same as Ezmia, she remembered her words that one day she would become like her, feeling like a complete stupid Alex suddenly understood that Ezmia was right and she was not better, she was even worse than her and he understood that this curse was big partly responsible for his corruption and fall, the same one she was beginning to suffer.

Physical Appearance

Ezmia was very tall and beautiful, although she recounts that she used to be average-looking before turning fully into a fairy. She had long magenta hair that often floated above her like flames, violet eyes with incredibly long eyelashes, similar to the antennae of an insect and reddish-purple lips. She wore a long purple gown with matching gloves and a high collar. She also wore a long black cape.[1]

Personality

From all the sadness, bitterness, and hatred in her past, as well as Morina's curse, Ezmia, who was once kind and caring, has become sadistic, crazy, unapologetically evil, destructive, demented, and incredibly prideful in her abilities to the point where she didn't believe she could be defeated, which, was exploited by Alex to take away her pride and eventually defeat her. She was known for not caring who she hurt or what she destroyed and also for taking pleasure in hurting things that cannot be helped, like a flower of Rumpelstiltskin's, which she destroyed without a second thought. She dreamed of taking over the entire Land of Stories as revenge for the torment in her past, once again not caring whose lives she affected.[2]

Powers And Abilities

Ezmia is an extremely powerful wicked fairy. Ezmia was mainly known for her ability to create powerful curses that hardly anyone could break them, her anger for never being loved, increased her magical powers the most. Ezmia at the same time could imprison the souls of those who had betrayed her and locked them in jars, likewise she also knew powerful spells and rituals, one of them to open a portal to the Otherworld.

Ezmia also demonstrated chlorokinetic abilities, as she enchanted the vines that covered the Eastern Kingdom during the Sleeping Curse and used them as a weapon, conjuring thorny roots and vines to attack and immobilize.

Relationships

The Late Fairy Godmother and the Fairy Council

Ezmia had very close ties to Brystal and the Fairy Council before she was kicked out.

The Souls in the Jars

She has been quite unhappy in love, and has taken revenge on her former lovers through magic. She has captured their souls and keeps them in jars.

The Curvy Tree

It was Ezmia's special place in the woods where she'd go and cry. The tree her tears fell on grew taller than the trees around it, and she cursed it to grow curvy and looped instead so it wouldn't stick out.

Emerelda Stone

She was jealous of Emerelda, another member of the Fairy Council, who took her place when she was kicked out from the Fairy Council when Brystal realized how cruel she had become, though nobody knew her change was due to Morina's curse. She loathed the twins, especially when they take her pride.

Ezmia's Parents

It is unknown what kind of relationship she had with her parents.

Rumpelstiltskin

The only person she even bothered to regard for was him, who she actually considered a friend, but who eventually also turned on her.

Behind the Scenes

Trivia

  • Ezmia used to take on the role of Morina, but Chris Colfer decided to change it.

"I decided from then on if the world was going to speak of my name it would be whispered in fear rather than mocked with envy. If the world was going to take all the joy from me, I would simply take away all the joy from the world."[6]

"The cruelest thing you can do to someone is to force them to hurt alone- and you left me hurting on my own many times."[7]

"It's true when people say that what doesn't kill you makes you stronger."
