"Every accomplishment in history started as an unrealistic goal. A prosperous future is built by the persistence of its past -Snow Queen

The Snow Queen was a powerful sorceress and the ruler of winter and all that is cold. She one of the main antagonists in The Land of Stories series, serving as an overarching antagonist in The Enchantress Returns, A Grimm Warning, and Beyond the Kingdoms, one of the various secondary antagonists in An Author's Odyssey and Worlds Collide and an unseen overarching antagonist in The Wishing Spell. She also serves as the main antagonist in A Tale of Magic...

Jack described her as a weather witch who, a long time ago, secretly plotted against the king of the Northern Kingdom, whom she had befriended by granting him wishes and making prophecies. She overthrew the king and covered the kingdom in an everlasting winter. She was eventually overthrown by Wise Prince White and banished to the Northern Mountains, where she lived in an icy lair with her polar bears. Every now and then, she sent a blizzard to let the people know that she was still there.

Back when she was Madame Weatherberry, she promised that she would send northern lights as a signal that she was winning the fight against the Snow Queen. The minute they disappeared meant that the Snow Queen had taken over.

Biography[]

Creation[]

Celeste 'Snowy' Weatherberry was a talented fairy who taught Brystal Evergreen, Emerelda Stone, Xanthous Hayfield, Lucy Goose, Skylene Lavenders, and Tangerina Turkin, who would go on to form the future Fairy Council. She was also the author of "The Truth About Magic", which was the plan to reduce tension between fairies and humans by fueling hatred for witches. The plan failed, but she had a backup plan, which was to turn into the Snow Queen with the help of her magic scepter and 4 witch allies, so that the humans would have to turn to the magical community for help on exterminating the Snow Queen, who was causing havoc in the Northern Kingdom.

The plan backfired since she was unable to control her power once she transformed, and the witches were no help because they had tricked her for their selfish gain. Frostbite marks and bruises (on arms and face) started appearing on her skin as signs of using witchcraft, and her students had to stop her.

Brystal (the future Fairy Godmother) refused to kill her, as she reasoned that the humans would not instantly trust the magical community just because of one defeat. Instead, they could rewrite history to say they did it. The deal was that the Snow Queen would retreat to the mountains to live out the rest of her life, and to only send occasional warnings and signals of her existence. Her other students did not know she was their former teacher.

Separation from Snowy Weatherberry[]

The Snow Queen was separated and blinded by Madame Weatherberry by using the remaining strength she had. When Brystal went to see her, it was seen that she froze the Snow Queen in a block of ice so that she couldn't harm anyone. Celeste's soul/spirit told her when the northern lights go out, the Snow Queen was causing trouble and needed to be stopped. She also told her what the Righteous Brotherhood was after seeing the bloodstone arrow. Then Lucy came and tried to hurt the Snow Queen using the bloodstone arrow, before Brystal told her that it was Madame Weatherberry, which she realized.

In the end, Brystal wrote all of the information she gave her in a letter to Emeralda, which Emeralda then found and read to everybody before saving her. In that letter, she also told everyone that Madame Weatherberry was the Snow Queen and what her plan was, which Lucy confirmed.

Cursing Ezmia[]

The Snow Queen worked with the Sea Witch to curse Ezmia. It was believed that sometime after the Fairy Godmother made portals to the otherworld she traveled there and planned on taking it over. She also later met the Masked Man.

Reigning the Northern Kingdom[]

At some point the Snow Queen went to the Northern Kingdom and offered to work as a royal sorceress. She quickly became friends with the king of that time, granting him prophecies and wishes. But at some point the queen killed the king of that time and took over the northern kingdom, casting a powerful spell that put the entire kingdom in perpetual winter.

Overthrow and Exile[]

Several years later, the wise Prince White (Snow White's grandfather) incited a revolution. Although the Snow Queen was an incredibly powerful witch, he managed to defeat her, but instead of murdering her, he banished her to the icy mountains of the north. The Snow Queen settled on one of the highest mountains and every so often she would conjure a powerful snow storm over the Northern Kingdom to assure the inhabitants that she was still there and that one day she would return.

2.The Enchantress Returns[]

Theft of the Snow Queen's Scepter[]

The twins and their friends decide to go first for the Snow Queen's scepter. They use the Granny airship to travel to the mountains of the northern kingdom, which is her lair. There they find her along with two polar bears, who trick her by telling her that she was still a queen.

Goldilocks tries to steal the scepter without her realizing it, but a bear discovers her and attacks her, which alerts the Snow Queen. Jack tries to go help her, but the queen quickly shoots him a beam of ice with her scepter, which paralyzes him. The twins start to distract her and she chases them around her lair, shooting ice rays and ice stalactites at them. One of her bears tells her where to shoot her energy rays, but the queen accidentally freezes her bear.

The disoriented and furious Snow Queen lets out a roar which shakes her entire cave and causes an avalanche of snow to fall on her. Alex tries to take the scepter from her but the queen takes her arm and says in a dry voice "Of four travelers one will not return" and she finally falls unconscious.

At the end of the book, the Snow Queen's prophecy is fulfilled, with Conner, his mother and Bob returning to the other world while Alex stays in the land of stories with his grandmother.

3.A Grimm Warning[]

Assisting the Grande Armée[]

The Masked Man lead General Marquis to the Snow Queen's lair to retrieve a dragon egg. The Snow Queen already knew what the Masked Man was coming to get, and reminded him of the deal they made the last time they met: the egg for the Northern Kingdom. She also knew who General Marquis was, having prophesied his coming a long time ago.[1] When they left with the egg, the Snow Queen foresaw that the Masked Man's identity would soon be revealed to the person he most wished to keep it secret from. Since their plan to overtake the Kingdoms failed, the Snow Queen did not get her part of the deal. At the end of the book, the Snow Queen's prophecy comes true, as the masked man reveals his identity to Alex, who mistakes him for his father John.

Meeting With the Witches[]

The Snow Queen and the Sea Witch met with Morina and the other witches to make a plan to curse Alex. They would use her to conquer the Otherworld.

She and the Sea Witch told Morina to curse Alex. When Morina left to cast the curse, the Sea Witch revealed her suspicions of Morina to the Snow Queen. The queen informed her that the Sea witch's suspicions were correct but she had seen the failure of Morina's plot to usurp them.

Second Death[]

The Snow Queen invaded the Otherworld along with the other witches. The forces of the Otherworld forced the witches to hide behind a magic barrier made by Alex in Central Park. In the battle between witches and fairies, the Snow Queen was melted/destroyed by Xanthous.

Physical Appearance[]

"The Snow Queen was a tall woman with a large white fur coat, a snowflake crown, and a cloth wrapped around her eyes. Her skin was so pale and frostbitten it was practically blue. She had a very strong jaw and tiny jagged teeth. She clutched a long icicle scepter in one hand, and her other hand was being stroked by something enormous and fluffy kneeling before her...it was a polar bear."[2]

The Snow Queen is a fairly tall woman with pale, almost blue skin, light blue hair tied up in a bun, a crown of snowflakes on her head, and a white blindfold that covers her eyes.

When Alex looked into her face without the blindfold, she noticed that the Snow Queen's eyes resembled two bright lights.[3]

She wears a large white fur coat that covers his entire body.

Personality[]

The Snow Queen is a woman who always has a serene and expressionless face but underneath that hides an evil, cruel, egocentric,power-hungry and tyrannical person. However, due to her blindness, she is very gullible since she believed her polar bears' lies that she lived in a palace and not in a cave and that she was still a queen.

The Snow Queen along with the The Sea Witch, crafted a long, elaborate plan to conquer the Otherworld. She was calm, cool, and cold like ice.

The Snow Queen was described to be carrying a grudge against the people of the Northern Kingdom.

Relationships[]

King Champion XIV[]

She was the former Royal Adviser of the King of the Northern Kingdom and knew the Masked Man (presumably also his identity.

Witches[]

She visited the other witches at their monthly gathering together with the Sea Witch. The other witches were terrified of them and even bowed.[4] It was revealed that she had previously worked together with the Sea Witch to curse Ezmia, to use her as a weapon to take over the Land of Stories and the Otherworld; when Ezmia was defeated by Alex, they shifted their focus to trying to curse Alex. Their curse wasn't strong enough, though, and they asked the other witches to join them.[5]

Powers and Abilities[]

The Snow Queen, like all witches, could cast spells, curses, charms, and enchantments. She, along with the Sea Witch, created a curse capable of amplifying the negative emotions of even the strongest fairy.

Like all witches, the Snow Queen's use of witchcraft had granted her an exceptionally long life. Her exact age was unknown but she had lived before Ezmia's corruption (since she was responsible for the poor fairy's plight.)

A kiss from the Snow Queen can erase all memories. Only true love can break the spell and restore what was taken.

The Snow Queen was known as a weather witch, meaning she had the ability to manipulate all aspects of weather, including rain, sleet and snow. The Snow Queen was gifted in ice magic. She could even create ice in warm places and could conjure a frost capable of instantly freezing everything in its path, likewise, she could also launch concentrated ice beams from his hands. She could also make icy constructs like the pillars of her mountain lair and her sleigh or icy golems like her snowflake-winged birds.

Despite her terrible case of frostbite, the Snow Queen may have had a degree of resistance to the cold. She had lived for years in a frigid climate and hadn't suffered from hypothermia.

Instead of seeing the present, the Snow Queen can gaze into the future. However, her premonitions are never clear and they come in the form of riddles.

Quotes[]

  • "You are not the first witch to see the Otherworld as a potential home, Morina."[6]-Snow Queen
  • "After centuries of sending blizzards through the kingdoms, I've collected the remaining specks,"-Snow Queen
  • "Morina will try to betray us, but she will fail," she said. "Once Alex Bailey is under the dust's spell, nothing will stop her-nothing!"-Snow Queen
  • "For someone so consumed in the future, you know nothing about the past," she said," The contents of this bag will ensure our conquest of the Otherworld."-Snow Queen
  • "Every accomplishment in history started as an unrealistic goal. A prosperous future is built by the persistence of its past - and we can't let doubt hold our persistence hostage."-Snow Queen

Trivia[]

  • Unlike the other fairy tale characters, the story the Snow Queen came from was never confirmed to exist in the Land of Stories but elements from it such as the evil mirror appear in the series.
  • The Snow Queen was not always evil; she was originally a fairy whose goal was to help the magical community.
  • The Snow Queen (formerly Celeste Weatherberry) used to be an author and a teacher who taught the Fairy Council how to channel emotions and how to use magic.
  • She had a husband named Horence Marks, who was burned alive at the stake because Celeste was a fairy. She used dark magic to bring him back, thus resulting in a damaged, black arm.
  • In A Tale of Sorcery... the Snow Queen died, killed by Kitty, Ryder's dragon. This directly contradicts The Land of Stories, as the Snow Queen appears multiple times in the series. However, it's possible that the Snow Queens were separate people under one curse or that the Snow Queen was revived at one point between A Tale of Sorcery... and The Wishing Spell
