The portal is disguised as a watercolor painting in the Fairy Godmother's cottage. The twins remember it from their visits to the cottage when they were younger. Inspired by the story of the magical painting in one of the Narnia books[1], they suspect it may be a portal and try to activate it.

Alex succeeds, but in doing so, floods the cottage, and it sinks into the pond.[2]

The Otherworld-side is in the Fairy Godmother's cottage in the woods. On the Land of Stories side, the portal leads to the Ugly Duckling Pond in the Northern Kingdom.
