The Sword in the Stone is a part of the world of King Arthur, the legendary British leader from many medieval histories and romances. It is the legendary sword Excalibur, which is embedded in a stone until Arthur manages to pull it out, fulfilling a prophecy about his future.
It is situated in a grassy clearing in the forest. There is a stack of rocks with a large boulder in the center, in which the sword has been inbedded. A plaque reads:
"HE WHO REMOVETH THIS SWORD FROM THIS STONE / SHALL REVEALETH HIMSELF THE TRUE KING OF ENGLAND"
The sword itself has a blue handle and a bright silver blade.
In Beyond the Kingdoms, Alex, Mother Goose and Lester travel into the story of King Arthur by mistake - they are tricked into it by the Masked Man, and think they are in the fairy-tale world at first.
They meet Merlin and Arthur. Alex and Arthur go for a walk in the woods and come upon the sword. Alex playfully tries to pull the sword from the stone, but fails. When they talk about Arthur's future and the prophecy of him becoming a legendary king, Arthur admits to Alex he is afraid people will be disappointed in him.
